Paddling

Canoeing and Sea Kayaking
Murtle Lake is North America’s largest paddle-only lake, with miles and miles of yellow sand beaches, rainbow trout and kokanee fishing, wildlife, mountain hikes, and more. No powerboats allowed, no pets allowed. We now offer canoe rentals there. For info go to www.murtlecanoes.com
Not enough for you? Clearwater and Azure Lake offer over 50 km of paddling, with beaches, waterfalls, rivers, hikes, wildlife, and limited use by powerboats (Jetskis prohibited).
Want more? Mahood Lake offers rustic lightly maintained lake shore sites at its east end that rarely see use: far away from the beaten path.

Whitewater Rafting and Kayaking
Local knowledge is critical here – get some advice before your first trip!
The lower Clearwater River is a mecca for whitewater fans. Three rafting companies Liquid Lifestyles, Riverside Adventures and Interior Whitewater Expeditions offer guided trips, from half-day to multi-day, through world class whitewater and mind blowing scenery. A must do experience on any Wells Gray wilderness trip. Preteens to grandparents, everyone is welcome.

If you are a whitewater kayaker, know your limits, as the Clearwater River has chewed on more than a few boats and people. Make friends at the local raft companies to find out what the conditions are like, and what you need to know. Kayaking lessons are available locally as well, if you want to give this high adrenaline sport a try.

Boating
Boaters have access to Clearwater, Azure and Mahood Lakes. All three are suitable for overnight camping trips, but not really for water sports. Personal watercraft (Jetskis or Seadoos) are banned outright, and water skiers have found conditions too cold and driftwoody for much fun.
This does leave lots of room for great fishing and some wonderful overnight camping opportunities. Make sure you have your camping fees and licences in order as all lakes are patrolled daily by Park staff. Check lake specific pages for more info.

  • Good To Know

There are several picnic stops along the Clearwater River, including Red Springs and Deer Creek.

  • About Clearwater

About an hour and 20 minute drive north of Kamloops, Clearwater has one or two of everything; a small supermarket(Safety Mart), a hospital, a library, a couple of hardware stores, several auto mechanics, fine dining, and lots of excellent hotels, B and B's, and motels.

The town is also a hive of outdoor adventure. You can try just about every outdoor activity imaginable, including:

    • Whitewater rafting & kayaking
    • Dog sledding
    • Horseback riding
    • Guided fly fishing
    • Guided canoe adventures
    • Cross country skiing
    • Hiking
  • Blue River

Blue River is a good place for a pit stop, but don't look for much in the way of facilities. There are several motels and restaurants, a couple gas stations, two general stores, and a medical station. That’s about it. There's no bank, so if you need cash get it in Clearwater or Valemount. The same goes for most groceries and camping supplies.
