Wells Gray for Canoes and Kayaks, Rafters and Boaters
|
No matter what kind of Water experience you want, Wells Gray has several options for you.
|

Canoeing and Calm water Kayakers
Two words: Murtle Lake. North America's Largest Canoe-
Only lake, with dozens and dozens of Km's of yellow sand
beaches, rainbow trout and Kokanee fishing, wildlife, mountain
hikes, and more. No powerboats allowed, no Pets allowed.
Not enough for you? Then there's Clearwater and Azure
Lake. Over 50 kms of paddling , with beaches, waterfalls,
rivers, hikes, wildlife, and limited use by powerboats, no Jet
Skis.
Want more? Mahood Lake offers rustic lightly maintained
lake shore sites at its east end that rarely see use: far away from
the beaten path.
Want to go with the flow? Depending on your skill level, river
canoe trips down the North Thompson are possible, Robert
Beaudry(it's franco-phone eh! pron. ROW-BEAR- not
Robert) at Riverside Adventures would be a good person to
ask about those kind of trips.
Whitewater Rafters and Kayakers
KAYAKERS - LOCAL KNOWLEDGE IS CRITICAL
HERE - GET SOME ADVICE BEFORE YOUR FIRST
TRIP!
The lower Clearwater River is a Mecca for Whitewater fans.
Two rafting companies Riverside Adventures and Interior
Whitewater Expeditions offer Guided trips, half day to multi
day, through world class whitewater and mind blowing scenery.
A must do experience on any Wells Gray Wilderness trip.
Preteens to Grandparents, everyone is welcome.
Whitewater Kayakers need to know their limits, as the
Clearwater River has chewed on more than a few boats and
people. Make friends at the local raft companies to find out
what the conditions are like, and what you need to know.
Kayaking lessons are available locally as well, if you want to
give this high adrenaline sport a try.
Boaters
Boaters have access to Clearwater, Azure and Mahood
Lakes. All three are suitable for overnight camping trips, but
not really for water sports. Personal watercraft(aka Jetskis or
Seadoos) are banned outright, and water skiers have found
conditions too cold and driftwoody for much fun.
This does leave lots of room for great fishing and some
wonderful overnight camping opportunities. Make sure you
have your camping fees and licences in order as all lakes are
patrolled daily by parks staff. Check lake specific pages for
more info.
